The Harriet Tubman Bronzes

The first Tubman life size bronze was done for Maryland Governor O’Malley, for the Maryland Government House in Annapolis MD. It is set on a pedestal of 460 yr old Wye Oak and actual 150 yr old sweet gum wood found in Dorchester County, where Harriet Tubman was born. This bronze bust was the first of an African American to be displayed in the Government House in Annapolis.

A second Harriet Tubman bronze life size sculpture is set on a pedestal of antique red cedar and historic 460 yr old Maryland Wye Oak, signifying her connection to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The simplicity of Ms Tubman’s life, her work in logging with her father, and the woodlands of Maryland and Delaware that she escaped through on the Underground Railroad are all called to mind in this sculpture.

The entire bronze and stand equaled Harriet Tubman’s reported height of 5’2”. This work resides in the entrance lobby of the Harriet Tubman Visitors Center in the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park in Church Creek MD.
